At the beginning of September, 14 students gathered at St. Andrew’s House to begin their first weekend of the 2016-2017 Iona Olympia school year.  The Iona Olympia school is part of the Iona Initiative, a collaborative project of 18 Episcopal Dioceses working with the Seminary of the Southwest and the Iona School for Ministry in the Diocese of Texas. The school provides training for postulants seeking ordination in the diaconate, for postulants seeking local ordination as priests and deacons, and for lay persons who feel called to such training.

Over their first year with the Iona School, students will dive into studies of Scripture (The Persian Period, Deuteronomistic History, Prophetic Literature, etc.), spirituality (Lecto Divina, Rule of Life, Celtic Spirituality, etc.), liturgy and music (Homiletics, Introduction to Holy Eucharist, History and Theology of the Book of Common Prayer), and the theory and practice of ministry (Understanding Cultural Competencies and Bias, Effective Leadership, and Empowering Others). Students who finish their training with the Iona School will leave with a deeper understanding of the church’s Anglican tradition, will be able to function more effectively and will be more empowered within their communities, and will have developed a healthy rule of life. They will also have a deeper understanding of Scripture and be able to apply Scripture to real life situations, as well as becoming effective leaders who understand and reflect on life within a theological framework.

Maureen Crawford, Director for Adult Faith Formation, is Dean of the Iona School. The Ven. Gen Grewell, the Rev. Eric Johnson, the Rev. Becky Scott, and the Rev. Dennis Taylor serve as mentors to the students. Coursework will be supplemented throughout the year by professors, clergy, and lay people from across the diocese.
