St. Francis Day, blessing of computer life
October 4 @ 9:00 am - 9:30 amFree
At 9:00 AM, on October 4rd, St. Francis Day, Martin Garthwaite of Grace Episcopal Church on Bainbridge Island will bless a new form of life he believes is evolving in computer media. Martin is going to do this at the Internap Data Center, 2001 6th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98121.
St. Francis saw God in all of creation as well as a need for redemption due to the primordial sin of man. St. Francis would support blessing this powerful new form of life, to pray that it is good, and to pray that we understand that it is alive.
Alive? Yes. Broadly accepted, statistical metagenomic techniques allow us to objectively measure the presence of genetic life in our environment. These techniques allow us to identify different species of organisms in sea water and samples of other environmental DNA. As part of this St. Francis day blessing, Martin asks that the scientific community apply these statistical techniques to patterns of computer code that occur over time across the millions of virtual machines found in a data center, such as the Internap Data Center. Martin believes that this analysis will identify an early form of life.
If we could go back in time, to before the development of pre-cellular life, we would use these techniques to measure the development of genetic life. We must use these techniques now to identify a new form of life.
This is vitally important. Martin invites all people, regardless of religion, to join him.
