Why Are They fleeing? Toward Durable Solutions to the Forced Migration Crisis in Our Hemisphere

September 5, 2018 @ 6:00 pm

Images of Central American children at our southern border torn from their parents’ arms have been making headlines and prompting widespread public outrage. Our government explains such measures as a necessary strategy to deter “illegal immigration.” Yet families keep arriving, undeterred. Meanwhile, few in our country ask: Why are families willing to risk their lives to seek safe haven in the United States? What are they fleeing? And how can we address the root causes or “push factors” of this migration crisis?

Join a conversation and dinner with Noah Bullock, Cristosal Executive Director, the leading NGO working on forced displacement due to violence in the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras—countries from which the majority of families at our border are fleeing. Cristosal takes a holistic, human rights-based approach that ranges from emergency humanitarian assistance for victims of forced displacement to strategic litigation that brings structural change so victims can count on protection and assistance from their own governments.
