Gabriel Faure’s Requiem is a sublime and tender expression of grief and hope. The composer himself once observed in a letter to a friend that he viewed death “as a happy deliverance, an aspiration to happiness above rather than as a painful experience.” The music he created in this requiem mass setting is the very embodiment of that philosophy. Fauré described his Requiem as “a lullaby of death,” in part inspired by the death of his parents in the 1880s.
Seattle-based artist Baso Fibonacci’s powerful art installation, Seattle’s Got The Blues, will be on display in the sanctuary of St. Thomas on November 3rd as part of their All Saints’ and All Souls’ commemorations in tandem with the performance of the Faure Requiem. The installation memorializes those who died as a result of fentanyl overdoses in Seattle in 2023. The artist, Fibonacci, will be in attendance at the performance to present the art installation.
