“Eternity at Our Centre”: Evelyn Underhill’s Words of Nurture and Refreshment in Uncertain Times

Evelyn Underhill (1975-1941) is a highly celebrated writer in spirituality who gave spiritual direction and led retreats in the 1920s and 30s in England. During World War II, she wrote letters of encouragement to her “Prayer Group” (quaintly named the “Theological Kindergarten”), to sustain and encourage them during their profound uncertainty and pain. Visiting scholar, Robyn Wrigley-Carr, will explore how particularly relevant to today’s uncertain times are her words from the period leading up to World War II. Wrigley-Carr will provide a lecture outlining some of the major strands of nurture and challenge in Underhill’s letters, before leading us in a time of prayer and meditation. This will be a powerful and enriching event, which will combine the talk with experiential periods of prayer and meditation.

Recommended for ages 14 and up.
