The primary purpose of the Bishop’s Commission on Liturgy and the Arts is to support diocesan parishes and missions in their most public presence: public worship on Sundays and throughout the week. We recognize that many seekers who enter our communities are first drawn by our ancient yet contemporary forms of worship. We also recognize that our worship orients us to service and witness in daily life: in the home, at work, and in the public square. Our liturgy rightly flows into Christ’s mission in the world.
The Commission serves the diocese in a number of ways: answering questions concerning liturgical resources; preparing workshops that support liturgical ministries in the parish (e.g., liturgical music, proclamation of the word, communion practices); collaboration with diocesan staff on convention worship; encouraging the submission of liturgical texts and liturgies to the bishop; offering webinars on various liturgical topics (e.g., composing the Prayers; preparing for a new lectionary cycle; supporting the Season of Creation); and encouraging full, active, and conscious participation in parish worship.
Members of the Commission reflect the skills needed to prepare and lead public worship. Thus we count musicians, liturgical artists, altar guild members and vergers, and persons trained in public proclamation and liturgical preaching, scripture, presiding, and liturgical and sacramental theology. Members of the Commission participate in Associated Parishes for Liturgy and Mission, the Association of Anglican Musicians, the North American Academy of Liturgy, and the Anglican Colloquium on Liturgy – thus bringing the work of related organizations to the diocese.
