On a sunny May morning, representatives of the Mayor’s Office, City Council, County, and State joined BRIDGE Housing and many development partners for the official groundbreaking ceremony at St. Luke’s, Seattle. Bishop Melissa Skelton began the ceremony with an invocation on behalf of the Diocese of Olympia, who is the property owner for this project.

When completed in 2025, there will be 84 units of very affordable (under 60% of Area Median Income) units, many of them with 2-3 bedrooms for families and multi-generational households. The director and staff from FamilyWorks, a non-profit service provider, were also on hand to talk about the many services that will be available to the residents, including affordable childcare in a new St. Luke’s.

St. Luke’s Edible Hope Kitchen provided refreshments for the nearly 200 people who were present. The crowd included bankers, politicians, diocesan representatives, contractors, architects, neighbors, the business community, St. Luke’s parishioners of all ages, and guests and volunteers from Edible Hope. It was an outward and visible sign of the church’s vision to Build Beloved Community that is welcoming and diverse, with Christian worship and service at its heart. As The Rev. Britt Olson said in her remarks:

Along the way, our commitment to a fully inclusive and beautifully diverse expression of God’s love has brought together the many partners present here today. Our small faith community has been enriched by the deep relationships we have with all of you and hundreds of others throughout the city, state, and Diocese. I often tell our little flock that God can do more than we can ask or imagine, and your help and support have made this possible.
