There is now a donation bin at Diocesan House where the hundreds of volunteers, committee members and other visitors can leave nonperishable food. In 1967 the Ecumenical Metropolitan Ministry (an interfaith organization) was founded to identify and address primary problems of the disadvantaged in the greater Seattle area. Hunger was soon identified as one of the biggest problems and efforts to address this problem were launched in St. Mark’s parking lot and headquartered in the basement of Diocesan House until 1980. The Ecumenical Metropolitan Ministry partnered with other organizations to establish a network of food banks that today can be found throughout the state.

Hunger is still a pressing need and it will now be easier for you to help stock Northwest Harvest’s shelves. Most of us are more than happy to put something in the bin at our church or grocery store, but do not think to drive to a specific collection point for this purpose.

Northwest Harvest will collect the donations as part of its regular rounds throughout the community. We invite you to partner with NW Harvest to meet the needs of fellow Washingtonians. More than 50% of NW Harvest’s clients are children or elderly, which creates a demand for some specific types of food. Here is the link to NW Harvest’s list of donation suggestions – although, of course, donations of all nutritious foods are welcome.

Let’s continue The Diocese of Olympia’s long tradition of addressing the problem of hunger in our midst!
