Becoming a Trauma Informed Church

June 26, 2:00 pm

As a church, we strive to be a place of healing for those hurt by the world. Unfortunately, words and actions can unintentionally perpetuate harm of the most vulnerable when we are not aware of trauma triggers. Join us to gain concrete tools to become a trauma-informed church in our liturgy, preaching, and outreach.

A little more information about our speaker, Jessica-

Jessica became disabled as a young adult and has worked for accessibility and inclusion specifically in third places for over 20 years. She’s worked with VSA Arts, the Woodland Park Zoo, and the World Institute on Disability, consulting with various businesses on inclusion and accessibility. Jessica holds a certificate in Universal Design for Learning and now brings her secular experience on inclusion into the church. Coming to the Episcopal Church after experiencing religious trauma from “faith healing”, Jessica feels called to break down barriers, both physical as well as spiritual by addressing the harmful theologies and behaviors that show disabled people that “we are not welcome as the Beloved People God created us to be.” Jessica currently attends the Iona School for Ministry and facilitates bereavement groups for traumatic loss through Swedish Hospital, while she gains experience in parish ministry and leadership. She began blogging for Bridge Disability Ministries in 2024 and is a member of the Spiritual Connections Vision Team at Bridge.
