On the night of Passover, before his betrayal, arrest, trial and crucifixion, Jesus and his disciples gathered to break bread. For them, this meal reflected all the richness of the Jewish Passover season. At this meal, Jesus washed his disciples’ feet, with the commandment to “love one another.” (“Maundy” is derived from the Latin, “mandate,” which means “I command you.”) This is also the occasion when he instituted what we now know as the “Eucharist.” At the end of this night, Jesus made his way to the Garden of Gethsemane.
