The name Tenebrae is the Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows” and refers to the ancient monastic night and early morning services of Matins and Lauds of the last three days of Holy Week, which in medieval times came to be celebrated on the preceding evenings. The service focuses on the chanting of psalms and readings from the book of Lamentations, as well as the extinguishing of candles until the church is in darkness.
