The “O” Antiphons Advent Liturgy at Saint Mark’s Cathedral

November 30, 7:00 pm

The annual “O” Antiphons Liturgy is once again offered on the First Sunday of Advent, November 30, 2025, at Saint Mark’s Cathedral and livestreamed. It is considered by many to be a highlight of the liturgical year at Saint Mark’s. The particular form of this liturgy was invented here, first presented in 1986, and is today used by churches around the world. Music for this liturgy is offered by the Senior Choristers of the Choir School, Cathedral Choir, and the Compline Choir —each choir offers their own anthem, with all three choirs coming together at the beginning and end of the service.

The “O” Antiphons service is similar to a “Lessons & Carols” service, but rather than presenting a linear narrative from scripture, it is structured around seven medieval antiphons, each beginning with the word “O” which also form the basis of the hymn O Come, O Come Emmanuel. This beloved cathedral tradition provides a moving and evocative entrance into the Advent season of prayerful expectation.
