Bishop Phil LaBelle, Canon Cristi Chapman, Property Manager Dennis Tierney, and diocesan donors were joined by the vicar of St. Luke’s, Seattle, Britt Olson, Property Stewardship Chair Barbara Wilson, and other members of St. Luke’s with the signed rafter at the Topping Off Ceremony on January 30, 2025.

Family focused affordable housing is only one part of Building a Place Where Love Dwells. We’re excited to see it going up so quickly! We’ve reached the halfway point of construction.

Eight stories, 84 units, nearly half are 2 and 3-bedroom. This is the first family focused affordable housing built in Ballard for over 25 years. Our neighbors are supportive!

Everyone in the neighborhood knows that St. Luke’s and the Diocese have made this housing possible. Residents begin moving in October, 2025.

And we’re not done yet!

A few of us enjoyed riding the construction cage to see the roof. The view from there is wonderful! This won’t be our last time in hard hats. This year we expect to start the second building. It will have 42 affordable workforce apartments, along with market rate housing and new space for St. Luke’s and it provides ground lease income for 100 years.

We’ll still have Kids’ Word, of course. We’ll also have classrooms for Sunday mornings that become affordable childcare during the week. Our kitchen will produce afternoon snacks for toddlers and preschoolers and community dinners for vulnerable neighbors.

Ballard is considered a childcare desert. St. Luke’s is partnering with Launch Preschool to provide Early Childhood Education to toddlers and preschoolers. Adding child sized bathrooms, extra storage and providing for all the requirements to be licensed wasn’t in the original budget.

St. Luke’s small congregation raised $1,000,000 for this complex project. Donors from the diocese and community have donated/pledged another $700,000. Our goal is $2,500,000.

  • Do you want families and individuals to have stable housing for the next 100 years?

Please join us and so many others in Building a House Where Love Dwells.
