Any sermon, lay or clergy, preached in any congregation in the Diocese of Olympia from the First Sunday of Advent, 2017 (December 3, 2017) through September 2, 2018, is eligible for consideration. The winner will be announced at the 2018 Diocesan Convention and will be awarded $1,000.
Sermons must be submitted by email to mkoski@ecww.org with the preacher’s name and contact information in the email and with the sermon attached as a Word or PDF file. The Propers used for the sermon must be included. The sermon should reference the date the sermon was preached but should not include any information about the identity of the preacher. This will enable the sermons to be anonymous when judged. Only one sermon per preacher.
Nominations must be received by September 30 , 2018.
The Criteria for the Judges: While we understand that sermons are spoken contextual events, judges will be making their determinations based on a written text (for sake of anonymity) and will be looking for a lectionary-based sermon that communicates the Good News of God in Christ both to long-timers and to newcomers or visitors to the congregation. The judges will be especially interested in receiving sermons that decode religious language so that those newer to the Episcopal Church can be evangelized within the context of worship.
Panel of Judges: A group of laity and clergy from the Diocese of Olympia.
