It’s with mixed emotions that we announce that The Rev. Canon Alissa Newton has been appointed Canon to the Ordinary for the Diocese of New York by The Rt. Rev. Matt Heyd, Bishop Co-Adjutor. Her appointment will begin March 1, 2024.

Alissa has served the Diocese of Olympia on the Bishop’s staff for the past ten years, beginning shortly after her diaconal ordination. Her first role was as Program Coordinator for Congregational Development. She then served as Canon for Congregational Development and, for the past three years, as Canon for Congregational Development and Leadership Formation.

Alissa has done outstanding work in resourcing congregations, clergy, and lay leaders in their work to develop their congregations. She has also enhanced the curriculum of the College for Congregational Development and expanded both the College’s training network and its reach across many dioceses in the Episcopal Church. She has accomplished these things and more while serving as Vicar of St. Columba’s in Kent from 2014-2023.

Alissa will remain in her role with us through the end of February, with her last day being February 23. There will be opportunities to say goodbye and thank Alissa for her time with us and to wish her well in her new role. We will miss her! In the meantime, please join us in congratulating her.

  1. Congratulations. We will miss you. They are fortunate to have you. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family 🌺

  2. Yesterday, Maundy Thursday, I heard Canon Newton speak at the Church of the Heavenly Rest here in New York.
She spoke to our present situation here in the city and in the country with great courage – and clarity – and from the heart.
I am sorry Washington, for your loss, but so grateful for her presence here. She has brought me back to the church, to the central reason for having faith, the need for it, at this critical time.

  3. Today at church during service we met Rev. Canon Alissa. I unknowingly addressed her as mother and without blinking an eye she replied with humility as we exchange Good Morning. No fan fare, no grandiose appearance just gracious humility.
Rev. Canon Alissa your sermon resonated and encouraged me to compose this message….
    FATHERS
Fathers, for the most part, are unsung heroes of the family. We are designed to be the provider, the disciplinarian, with very little communication of appreciation and recognition…..even Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus Christ, is only mentioned 14 times in the Bible.
    But,
When we pray to God, our FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN 💕 we feel protected, guided, loved, leading us through this life….
With a strong foundation to be able to run back to him every time, and he will be there. Showing us why we are called… Fathers
    HAPPY FATHER’S DAY 6/15/25 🚸🙏🏼💯💪🏼💖
Thank you for making this Father’s Day perfect 🌹🕊️
