From Don Fornoff, the Bishop’s Task Force on Homelessness:

I wish I could say that many activities to address homelessness are taking place these days. It sometimes feels as though all there is is a big complaint session. Finding solutions locally and in general seems to be out of reach – just read the papers (or online) to find lots of money is being spent but without a lot of success. That is why our Task Force continues to emphasize positive actions to find solutions – helping individuals and helping groups to succeed.

That is why I feel so privileged to have been at the kickoff for the St. Luke’s Ballard build of affordable housing, church and community space, and childcare – Building A Place Where Love Dwells. I was invited by Rev. Canon Britt Olson, Vicar of St. Luke’s, who invited all of our Task Force and is a true believer in our mission. The gathering, hosted by Canon Britt and Bishop Melissa Skelton, was most inspirational, as it should be, and informative of the scope and reasons for the build. The build will include family-focused, affordable housing supported by grants from the city and state as well as outside grants. BRIDGE Housing is included in the partnership. The congregation itself raised nearly $1 million. I remain amazed and full of love for what can be done in faith. I encourage all to go to the St. Luke’s website to see the details of this work and the wonder of creation demonstrated by all involved.

Another action focused on solutions is a desire to explore safe parking at St. Timothy in Chehalis. I take the liberty to highlight this project which is only in a review stage, supported by Deacon Jeffrey Boyce. If any supportive readers have good, helpful thoughts, contact Rev. Kay Flores. This is also our Task Force’s aim, to advise, counsel, and help other parishes in getting started on doing something for the unhoused, our NEIGHBORS.

Another action is putting together regional summits to address issues of the unhoused. Focused on churches, the regions include Everett and north, Seattle, Tacoma and south, and Westside. It is very early in the planning stage, but I am excited that there is recognition of the value of actions made in faith. If anyone desires to learn more about this effort and add positive thoughts, please contact me at mountaineerdgf@aol.com.

I will leave us with a potential negative that must be paid attention to – the Supreme Court case Johnson V. city of Grant’s Pass. Initial reviews contain a number of concerns, so those who follow legal issues, please keep your eyes and ears open. The future will likely require increased vigilance and support for homelessness in local jurisdictions. The positives that can come out of the Court’s deliberations (due in June) is that we can be forced to provide new and creative ways to address homelessness to help our neighbors.

Dear Ones. Remember to build LOVE!
