We encounter Mary in a place where verbal tradition, mythical archetype, and steadfast devotion meet. Mary humbly responds to an angel, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” The same young woman also proclaims that God “has brought down the powerful from their thrones and lifted up the lowly”!
Mary only speaks in the Bible in four scenes. Has any other figure in history become so revered with so few words attributed to her? Come explore with us the ways Mary is portrayed in the Bible in her precious few appearances there; in early and later Church tradition; and in creative new ways in our culture today.
